Carl Carder of Gallatin was promoted to Masterchief by Commanding Officer Captain Garold Ulmer during a ceremony held March 28, at Port Hueneme, Calif., home of the Pacific Seabees. Masterchief is the highest rank attainable in the enlisted ranks. Carl was also one of three who received the high honor of being pinned with the Navy Achievement Medal. It’s a tradition in Carl’s battalion that upon retirement a Masterchief hand down their anchors to someone they want to see promoted. Retired Masterchief J.D. Johnson gave Carl his anchors and told him that he’d make it someday. Carl said his only regret was that two special people were not able to attend the event <197> his wife Sherri was not able to be there to pin the Masterchief medal on him, and retired Masterchief Johnson was not able to be present to see his prediction fulfilled.
