James Rogers of Gallatin found this Carolina False Morel this week, somewhere among the dead elm and green ash trees and plum thickets of Daviess County. The morel is eleven inches tall and nine inches wide and weighed five pounds. James said the Carolina False Morel should not be confused with the beefsteak or beef heart morel. He adds some morels and mushrooms are toxic and not to be messed with, so hunter beware. James said he and his daughter, Destiny, 6, have also found a lot of the early common spring mushrooms. In fact, he has two gallons in the ice box already! James is the grandson of Jetta and the late David Rogers.
